Canada Welcomes Immigrants From Hong Kong

Recently, Canadian immigration services announced an initiative to attract youth and students from Hong Kong by opening up new open work permits and an easier way to permanent residency. This is partly the result of a response to the Chinese government’s implementation of the national security law in Hong Kong on June 30, 2020.
What is this June 30, 2020 Chinese Security Law For Hong Kong?
China passed a national security law for Hong Kong, on June 30, 2020, which criminalizes “secession, subversion, terrorism and collusion with foreign forces.” These crimes that undermine rights and freedoms have broad definitions.
It is estimated that 300,000 Canadians are now living in Hong Kong; there are also now many Canadians of Hong Kong descent living in Canada.
Who Benefits From the New Policies?
It is directed at Hong Kong residents who recently graduated and those with skilled work experience Choosing Canada as a place to study, work, and remain is desired. Those from Hong Kong who are currently in Canada and want to stay here are offered support.
Some Provisions
Additions to the existing immigration policies are being made. They include the following:
- Expedited documents for Canadian permanent residents returning from Hong Kong at any time
- Easier travel here for family members who now live in Hong Kong
- Quarantine for 14 days when arriving is still required for all
Open Work Permit
There is also a program for eligible Hong Kong residents in Canada or abroad who recently completed after-high school studies; they may apply for an open work permit, valid for up to 3 years. Canada welcomes the skills of the students and graduates of Hong Kong and wants to make the pathway to employment in Canada easier.
Other Measures
In order to speed up processing of permanent residence applications who wish to come here, new measures will expedite documents for Canadians and Canadian permanent residents in Hong Kong. Included in this are family sponsorships, which will benefit Hong Kong residents. Hong Kong youth who study or work in Canada are also encouraged.
